When we first started researching FTP products, we heard, again and again,
that if we wanted a powerful, secure and easy-to-use tool, that we needed to
check out Serv-U FTP.
At first we were unable to find the product, but then discovered it had
been acquired by RhinoSoft.
Somewhere along the way, the price increased significantly, too.
Serv-U FTP is
available in three flavors ranging from the limited FREE version (good
for one domain with a single concurrent connection) to the Standard
version (one domain with a maximum of 25 concurrent connections), to the Professional
version (unlimited domains with unlimited connections). Pricing varies from
$39.95 to $5,999.95 (for the enterprise-wide solution).

Installation was fairly quick and intuitive. You need to know
your IP addresses and domain names, but other than that, it's not very tricky
to implement. Our technical staff had it all up and running with almost 100
domains in about two hours.
The application's graphical user interface itself is very
intuitive. With an explorer-like view in the left panel, you drill down to the
domain you want to set-up. There you have a number of options including
individual user and group permissions. The right panel has a tabular interface
which enables you to quickly hop from tab to tab to enter all relevant IP and
logging details.
Once the set-up was completed, there was no discernible
difference in our FTP interaction with our test server. We use Ipswitch's
WS-FTP for most of our testing and work. Logging in was the same, the
application was fast, and communication between client and server was
reliable. We could view the FTP log back on the server through Serv-U
FTP and could see all of our activities clearly.
About the most important element here is security. We're not
entirely sure how or why, but before testing and implementing Serv-U
FTP, we noticed many hacker attempts into our test server. Now those
familiar hacker names are no longer popping up. Obviously Serv-U
FTP has something going for it under the surface, and for that reason
alone may be worth every penny you pay for it.
For all of your FTP communications requirements, we recommend
looking at Serv-U FTP.
