This is one of several cool tools developed by a Russian firm by the name of
Elcom, Ltd. If you manage large email lists
as part of your web site promotional efforts, you have no doubt felt the frustration of
grooming your email address list to insure you are reaching real people with legitimate
email addresses. This can take several days per month as you attempt to ping each and
every address, but this is a necessary evil if you want to avoid jamming your ISP mail
server with bogus email messages and being branded a spammer by unsuspecting strangers.
Advanced Mail List Verify (AMV) does exactly what it says: it checks your address book
entries by attempting to send an email message to each address entry. To avoid problems,
it stops short of actually sending the email, but it gets far enough into the process to
flag the address as either being good or bad. We imported a list of 500+ addresses and let
it fly. Within five minutes we discovered several dead email addresses and quickly deleted
them from our address book for future reference.
The tool is easy to use. You simply export the address book from your favorite email
package, like MS-Outlook, and import it into Advanced Mail List Verify. Once loaded, you
just click on the Check Addresses button and away it goes. You can sort the on-screen
results in any number of ways.
One of the features I particularly like is the ability to just check a single address.
Since many web sites now use a word-of-mouth referral form, it is quite quick and painless
to cut and paste a single email address into Advanced Mail List Verify to check its
validity -- without going through the complete export/import process of an entire address
book.
AMV also comes with a number of value-added utilities to help you in your verification
efforts. While the core product is able to handle lists of 100,000 names, additional
utilities help you to manage and sort larger lists. AMV can find about 90% of your dead
emails, and because it is multi-threaded, it works fast.
Elcom has a few other email-related tools which may be worth your time. You
