As a consultant, I travel quite a bit. When I first purchased my laptop, I
realized that there wasn't a hard drive large enough to hold all of the
applications and client data I needed to carry around, so I started looking
around for a remote desktop solution that would allow me to login to my home
office PC to check email, use applications, and access client data. I know
there are a lot of public domain tools available such as VNC and Hamachi, but GoToMyPC Pro
won hands down!
After you sign-up for the GoToMyPC Pro
service, you download and
install a small utility to the PC you want to register for remote access
service. Once the installation is completed, the GoToMyPC Pro icon will appear in
your Taskbar.
Through this icon you can set-up your preferences, check for
upgrades to the software, and most importantly invite a guest to your PC so
you can show them something. This is great for a demo or even for
troubleshooting.
To access your PC remotely, you merely visit the GoToMyPC Pro
web
site and login. This is the first layer of security to access your account.
Upon login you are then presented with a list of registered
PCs you may access remotely. Your remote PC will be listed here along with a
Connect button. When you click the Connect button, GoToMyPC Pro
attempts to
connect with your remote desktop. After the service and PC "shake hands",
you must login with your remote password. This is a second level of security.
After successfully connecting to your desktop, you will then
be connected to your remote PC. You can do anything remotely that you would do
if you were sitting right in front of it!
GoToMyPC Pro
has some other tools and functionality built into it
which makes it quite nice. It has built-in FTP so you can transfer files back
and forth quite quickly and easily. One night I logged in and found myself
facing the Windows login screen! Apparently, Windows had auto-updated my PC
and then restarted itself. Despite this reboot, I was still able to login.
Real nice feature.
