Here's an unusual business tool that helps employers determine the
psychological make-up of their prospective employees. It's called Personality
Pro and I was pretty impressed by the results.
A growing trend among larger employers is to ask job candidates to take a
personality test. This supposedly helps weed out the losers and identify the
winners. The developer also says some companies use this internally to
identify employees for promotions.
I took a personality test about a year ago and scoffed at it. It was
supposed to take about 3 hours to answer all of the questions, and some of
them were hilarious. My favorite was the one that said something like: Agree
or Disagree, When I get angry I like to shoot things.
Well, when I finished the test in about an hour (I'm sorry, I just could
not take it seriously), the employer's HR director was surprised and asked if
everything was all right. I told her, "Yeah, I just have to go home and
polish my guns," and I gave a demonic look. Hey, I didn't need the job
anyway!
But seriously folks, if you want to use a tool that doesn't tax your
candidates then this may be it. I took a sample personality test within 5
minutes, and the results were right on target. I may not have wanted to agree
with the results, but they were accurate.
This is a very simple tool to set-up and use. Once installed
you can password protect the test results and reporting. Just send people in
to a room to take the test. When they are done, the administrator can login
and pull the results and the interpretations of the answers.
In the test I took there were about 24 screens. Each one
showed two columns, Most and Least, and a list of four words. The object is
for the person to simply click on the word they most relate to and least
relate to. You progress through a series of these screens until you are done.
The test can be taken in minutes which puts it head and shoulders above the
half-day ordeal I faced last year.
