For the past 20 years I have been lucky enough to be involved in marketing and promotion in a number of different industries including software, hardware, telecommunications, and most recently cable television.
No matter what the industry, the greatest challenge in promotional writing is
developing the initial headline.
Headlines are the FIRST thing your reader sees, no matter what the medium. It typically appears at the top of a page - print ad - letter, or on the cover of a print brochure, or on the first screen of a web site, or in the first frame of animated banner ad.
I tend to believe that headline length is not nearly as important as capturing the attention of the reader. If the headline does not MOVE the reader to READ the rest of copy after the headline then it is ineffective.
As a rule of thumb, I believe that a headline must be 10 words or less. If you can not describe the BENEFIT of your product or service in 10 words or less then you have not thought about it enough. The headline is the beginning of your sales pitch.
It must sum up a BENEFIT and peak their CURIOSITY TO LEARN MORE.
